Dave and Dai is the second episode of the second series of The Dark Railway Series.

Plot[]

A rise in coal traffic on the Dark Railway results in Mr. Dark hiring an engine from another railway in temporarily. The engines are disappointed to see that the engine is an old, rusty Somerset and Dorset 7F, who introduces himself as Dai. They quickly start teasing him due to his age and appearance, upsetting Dai greatly. Theo and Otto, however, are sympathetic towards him, telling them that he shouldn't let them get to him as long as he knows he is useful.

Cheered up, Dai gets on with his work, ignoring the other engine's taunts. Over time, most of them realise just how hard working he is, and stop making fun of him, though Dave continues to be rude.

One day, Dai arrives at the Industrial Estate to collect a goods train while Dave leaves with his own, making another snide remark as he does so. Dai waits for his signal to turn green, but it doesn't. A while later, a man comes up to him asking for help, as Dave has broken down on the hill just outside the tunnel. Not wanting to be late, Dai and his driver agree to try and push Dave's train while still carrying their own. They find Dave, and successfully push him to Manston Fore before continuing on with their own train.

That evening, when Dai returns to the shed, Dave apologises for his teasing and, awestruck, asks him how he managed to push his train while still pulling his own. Dai reveals that this isn't the first time such an event has occurred with him, and he begins telling Dave stories of his past.
