The Dark Railway's New Years Eve party ends with the engines suffering from the effects of alcohol and drugs dreadfully. Dave, who has somehow ended up in Wolverhampton, returns to Galen Junction in a foul mood, and goes to sleep with a pounding headache. The next morning, Mr. Dark comes to see Dave. telling him that he is due to be sent to the works to be repainted. Dave is delighted, and goes to boast to Brian and Raymond before leaving.
Several days later, Dave returns to the sheds, but not in green: he has been repainted black. Brian and Raymond laugh at him for it, with Raymond declaring he is now the unique one as he leaves to pull the express. When Dave arrives at Merecombe Gasworks, Owen and Ryan tell him that he looks very smart, cheering him up. As he leaves, however, the two shunters start snickering to each other.
As Dave arrives at the Junction with his train, the yard manager asks him to leave his train and head to Colhapper to take the express as the engine pulling it has failed. Dave obliges, and when he arrives at Colhapper he is delighted to discover that the failed engine is Raymond. He heads off with the express, and that evening he assists Raymond back to the Junction. Mr. Dark is waiting for them, and tells Dave that as a reward, he will return to the works to be painted into BR lined black, with his very own nameplates as compensation for not being allowed to be painted green. As Mr. Dark leaves, Dave begins teasing Raymond over his failure.
Dave soon returns looking very smart indeed, whilst Raymond ends up having his entire engine replaced. Dave's nameplates make him feel very special, and doesn't mind doing any duties, be it passenger or freight.

- This is the first episode to feature the running joke of Mr. Dark frightening his engines with his sudden appearances.
